A DIM CANDIDATE COMPANION TO ǫ CEPHEI

چکیده

Using a vector vortex coronagraph behind the 1.5-m well-corrected subaperture (WCS) at Palomar, we detected a second object very close to ǫ Cephei, a δ Scuti F0 IV star. The candidate companion, ∼ 50 times fainter than ǫ Cephei, if physically associated, is a late-type K or early M star, and lies at an angular separation of 330 mas, or 1.1 λ/D for the WCS, making it the smallest angle detection ever realized with a coronagraph in terms of λ/D units. The projected separation of the putative companion is ∼ 8.6 AU, most likely on a highly eccentric orbit. The recently detected near-infrared excess is thus likely not due to hot dust. Moreover, we also show that the previously reported IRAS 60 μm excess was due to source confusion on the galactic plane. The close Be star companion of β Cephei

Context. The prototype of the β Cephei class of pulsating stars, β Cep, rotates relatively slowly, and yet displays episodic Hα emission. Such behaviour is typical of a rapidly rotating, classical Be star. For some time this posed a contradiction to our understanding of the Be phenomena as rapid rotation is thought to be a prerequisite for the characteristic emission phases of Be stars. Recent ...

On the H α emission from the β Cephei system

Context. Be stars, which are characterised by intermittent emission in their hydrogen lines, are known to be fast rotators. This fast rotation is a requirement for the formation of a Keplerian disk, which in turn gives rise to the emission. However, the pulsating, magnetic B1IV star β Cephei is a very slow rotator that still shows Hα emission episodes like in other Be stars, contradicting curre...

Planetary formation in the γ Cephei system

We numerically investigate under which conditions the planet detected at 2.1 AU of γ Cephei could form through the core-accretion scenario despite the perturbing presence of the highly eccentric companion star. We first show that the initial stage of runaway accretion of kilometer-sized planetesimals is possible within 2.5 AU from the central star only if large amounts of gas are present. In th...

Multiplicity of Galactic Cepheids from long-baseline interferometry – III. Sub-percent limits on the relative brightness of a close companion of δ Cephei

We report new CHARA/Michigan InfraRed Combiner interferometric observations of the Cepheid archetype δ Cep, which aimed at detecting the newly discovered spectroscopic companion. We reached a maximum dynamic range H = 6.4, 5.8 and 5.2 mag, respectively, within the relative distance to the Cepheid r < 25 mas, 25 < r < 50 mas and 50 < r < 100 mas. Our observations did not show strong evidence of ...

Instability strips of SPB and β Cephei stars: the effect of the updated OP opacities and of the metal mixture

The discovery of β Cephei stars in low metallicity environments, as well as the difficulty in theoretically explaining the excitation of the pulsation modes observed in some β Cephei and hybrid SPB-β Cephei pulsators, suggest that the “iron opacity bump” provided by stellar models could be underestimated. We analyze the effect of uncertainties in the opacity computations and in the solar metal ...
